The Omron Sprague Rappaport is the stethoscope to buy if you’re a student about to go into a clinical rotation.
This stethoscope is one of the cheapest stethoscopes you can buy that actually works modestly well.
It has it’s drawbacks, to which I’ll go into further detail, but for your first stethoscope to figure out what you really would like moving forward, you have nothing to lose with the Sprage Rappaport.
It’s the perfect model of stethoscope if you’re looking for something that’s cost effective and has good acoustic quality.

As this is a rather bare-bones form of stethoscope, ergonomics are not at the forefront of this product’s design. The hard plastic earpieces make using this scope for extended periods of time rather tiring, but overall it’s passable if you need it just for cursory use or to have as a back up unit.
The acoustic quality on the Omron Spragge Rappaport is really bolstered by the fact that this scope uses a double tubed system. Instead of one tube transferring the sound to both binaurals, each earpiece has it’s own tube to ferry the sound directly into your ears, resulting in crisp and clear sound quality. I recommend that students just beginning to listen for body sounds purchase a double tubed stethoscope because it allows you to better get a feel for the specific sounds produced by diastolic and systolic heartbeats. I recommend using duct tape to tape some parts of the tubing together to avoid them rubbing together and creating noise that interferes with the auscultation process.
Benefits to Students
A pleasant addition to the the Spragge Rappaport is that the stethoscope is bundled with three different open bells and two different sizes of diaphragm, lending this product ultimate versatility for a student to use in that it can be used for nearly any patient someone might come across. Whether it be a foetus, a child, or an adult, the Spragge Rappaport has the proper tool to get an accurate reading. Simply remove the current bell or diaphragm as per the included instructions, insert the new one, ensure it has been properly installed, and you’re ready to begin auscultating.
This is already one of the more inexpensive stethoscopes a student could purchase, so the added bells and diaphragms make this scope very worth it.
Where to Buy
The best place to buy the Spragge Rappaport is on Amazon. It sells for just under $20 and is an absolute steal in my opinion. If you click the link below you’ll be taken to their site and will find the best price. You’ll also get free shipping on orders over $25.
The Omron Spragge Rappaport is a great option for students who need a versatile and dependable stethoscope for their future in the medical field. It’s the model that got me through my clinical rotations.
The hard plastic earpieces aren’t the most comfortable part of the device but overall I’ve seldom had difficulty auscultating with a Rappaport. The only times where there has been difficulty hearing heartbeats is when I’ve used it on more heavy-set patients and for that the Rappaport isn’t the greatest. The extra sizes of bell and diaphragm included make it an ideal all around scope. In closing, the Omron Spragge Rappaport provides great acoustic quality and is an extremely adaptable system.
