Littmann has always been a brand associated with a strong degree of elitism, and I will certainly agree I have never been let down by a Littmann. The Littmann Classic II S.E. has been bought by millions of nurses and doctors over the years for its extremely clear sound quality.

As Littmann has great pride in being a top of the line stethoscope brand, they put a lot of work into ensuring doctors and nurses actually use their product. As such, nearly all Littmann scopes have soft sealing earpieces to make the experience free of discomfort for the user. The patient has the benefit of the non-chill rim so there is no flinching or dreading seeing a Littmann stethoscope, and the Classic II is no exception. The angle of the eartubes is spot on for alignment with the ear canals. I’ve used for hours cumulatively over a day and have not gone home massaging my ears, which is something I’ve never forgotten about my Littmann.
I commend the chestpiece of the Classic II for its high acoustic sensitivity. The chestpiece is dual sided and made of stainless steel and has a tunable diaphragm, meaning that the amount of force applied makes the difference between hearing low-frequency sounds and high-frequency sounds, while still including a bell for low frequency noises. The acoustic quality of the Classic II is middle of the road for a Littmann, but it vastly outperforms less prestigious brands. As far as a student is concerned, the Littmann Classic II S.E. is as high quality as you’d like to go, you simply won’t benefit from the added sound quality of the higher end Littmanns while still learning the ropes.
My old Classic from a few years back still my office somewhere to remind me of my days in residency. Without a doubt, I can say it has gotten hours upon hours of use. Even after constantly adjusting and readjusting the eartubes and stuffing it into my pockets an untold number of times, it still performed flawlessly. The tubing is fantastically constructed, quite stain resistant and has the benefit of being latex free. I have never worried about any part of my Littmann Classic failing me.
The 3M Littmann Classic II S.E. is a great option from Littmann for those who are willing to spend a modest sum on something that is guaranteed to perform and outlast an inferior stethoscope. With stellar acoustic quality and a tunable diaphragm this scope is worth the money and won’t disappoint.
